Family meal planner: end the « what's for dinner? » loop

Plan together, share recipes, send ingredients to the shopping list in one tap.

Every household lives the same daily moment at 5:30pm: « so… what's for dinner? ». Followed by 20 minutes of fridge-staring, three « I don't know either »s, and a takeaway. A shared meal planner doesn't have to be a Pinterest spreadsheet. With Zoku, you plan in 10 minutes on Sunday evening, send the ingredients to the shopping list, and the rest of the week runs on autopilot.

The 5:30pm meltdown is real

Meal planning isn't just about food: it's the mental load that compounds across every other domain (groceries, budget, time, stress). Same scenes, every household:

« What's for dinner? »

Asked daily by 3+ people. Answered by you, every time, while staring at a fridge that doesn't help.

The pasta-on-pasta cycle

You ran out of ideas, so it's pasta again. Then again. Now the kids complain and you feel guilty.

Three trips to the supermarket

You went on Saturday. Then Tuesday because you forgot zucchinis. Then Thursday because Wednesday's plan needed cream.

« We never have anything to cook »

The fridge is full. The freezer is full. The pantry is full. And yet, nothing seems to combine into a meal.

How the Zoku meal planner works

Four things make it actually useful for families (not just another empty calendar):

Lunch + dinner per day

Plan each meal slot independently for the week. Skip the lunches if you don't eat together at noon. No pressure to fill everything.

Shared recipe library

Build a personal library of your favorite recipes (with photos, ingredients, steps). Shared across the tribe, so your partner can add their own.

Ingredients → shopping list

From a planned meal, one tap sends all ingredients into your shared shopping list, deduplicated across the week's recipes.

Same plan for everyone

The whole tribe sees the menu in real time. Your teenager can check the plan instead of asking you. Your partner knows what's on tonight.

A personalised meal planner, not a ready-made menu

Menu apps serve you someone else's recipes. Zoku starts from your tribe: its recipes, its habits, what's left in the fridge.

  • Your own recipes: the planner draws on your tribe's recipe library, filled by everyone. Grandma's shepherd's pie has its place.
  • Ideas from what you have: list the ingredients you have left and the AI suggests 3 recipes with their ingredients and steps. One suggestion a day included, unlimited with Premium.
  • Suggestions from your habits: Zoku suggests dishes based on what your tribe often cooks.
  • Your rhythm: lunch, dinner or both, starter, main and dessert or a single dish, day or week view.

A typical Sunday evening with Zoku

Here's how the meal cycle runs from planning to plate:

Sunday evening: plan the week (10 min)

Open the planner. Pick 5 dinners for the upcoming week from your recipe library. Leave Saturday open for « we'll see ».

Right after: push ingredients to shopping list

One tap on each planned meal sends its ingredients to your shared shopping list. Duplicates collapse automatically.

Monday to Friday: cook without thinking

At 5:30pm, open the planner instead of the fridge. Today's recipe is already there with ingredients and steps. No more « what's for dinner? ».

Saturday: bonus discovery

Your teenager checked tomorrow's plan, prepped the rice, and surprised you. (We can't guarantee this. But it happens.)

Not just for big families

The planner adapts to any household setup:

  • Couples: even with two adults, « what's for dinner » consumes 5+ hours/week of mental energy. Plan once, recover the hours.
  • Families with picky eaters: having the menu visible upfront reduces last-minute negotiation, and lets you alternate « my dish » / « their dish ».
  • Flatshares: coordinate who cooks for whom, with a shared recipe library that grows over time.
  • Separated parents: each household has its own plan, plus the option of a shared tribe for the kids' favorites.

FAQ - Meal planner with Zoku

Can I plan lunches and dinners separately?

Yes. Each meal slot (lunch or dinner) is planned independently for each day. If you only eat dinner together, leave lunches empty: no obligation to fill everything.

How does the recipe library work?

You build your own recipes (title, ingredients, steps, photo) in a personal library. It's shared across the tribe, so your partner can also add recipes. You then pick a recipe from the library and add it to a planner slot to reuse it.

Is the meal planner personalised?

Yes: it starts from your tribe, not from a standard menu. Your own recipes, suggestions based on your tribe's habits, and AI recipe ideas from the ingredients you have on hand (one suggestion a day included, unlimited with Premium). You choose what you plan: lunch, dinner, starter, main, dessert.

Do the ingredients really land in the shopping list?

Yes, in one tap from the planned meal. Zoku pulls the recipe's ingredients into your shopping list, automatically deduplicating items that appear in multiple recipes of the week.

Can I plan more than one week ahead?

Yes, you can plan future weeks to get ahead (vacations, busy weeks). The planner rolls over automatically every Sunday to show the next week's view.

Does everyone in the tribe see the same plan?

Yes. The plan is synced in real time across the whole tribe: your partner, your teens, your roommates see the same menu. Handy for answering « what's for dinner? » without saying it out loud.

What if I improvise or change my mind at the last minute?

Totally fine: the plan is a guide, not a contract. You can edit or remove a planned meal anytime, or just ignore it. Groceries already bought stay in your home stock for another day.

Does it work for couples without kids or for roommates?

Of course. Most features aren't parent-specific: DINK couples, student flatshares, blended families. Everyone gets stuck on « what's for dinner? » and everyone benefits from planning.
